Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band-Outer South

Folk Rock, Indie Rock

A leak, a leak! Here is the second album by Bright Eyes lead man Conor Oberst and backed by the Mystic Valley Band. For those not in the know Oberst is the leader of indie group Bright Eyes; I’ve heard Bright Eyes described from everything as “My Chemical Romance but acoustic” to “Modern day hippie music”. I have always seen Bright Eyes as an artistic outlet for Oberst to release his feelings in very emotionally driven music. Now with the Mystic Valley Band, Oberst has taken a more folky approach (going so far as to being compared to Bob Dylan) as evident by last year’s self-titled release. This album is no different, though the lyrics do express a more Bright Eyes tone with the Dylan feel. One of the more interesting things about this album is the fact Conor let some of his band mates sing their songs. This allows a good amount of variety while staying in a certain spectrum. When all is said and done though this album is not ground-breaking, or album of the year. It’s going to be enjoyable for the next couple of months and a great summer record.
